We love Jesus and we want to help our children find out how brilliant he is. We’ve wanted to tell our kids about Jesus right from the start but we really struggled to find resources we could use when our lot were tiny. They were too small for lots of the very good, but rather earnest, children’s Bibles we owned. We felt we were reading stories to tick a box and make us feel good rather than to actually help our children find out about our amazing God.
So we started writing our own very simple stories and using play as a way of naturally encorporating conversation and discovery about Jesus in our everyday life. We’ve seen simplicity make a real difference both for pre-school aged Dan and Mikey who has a learning disability.
This works especially well for me as a mum. The Bible puts the onus on Dads to take responsibility for teaching their kids. I find that my role is to apply that teaching to normal life. I’m the one who prays with them if they’re worried before nursery, I’m the one who comforts them when they’re sad or ill, I’m the one who models that loving Jesus affects his followers when they’re chatting to someone in tesco or watching tv or cleaning the kitchen. Just like a sermon on a Sunday is useless without putting what we hear into practice, formal teaching about Jesus has very little impact on our kids if we’re not helping them see how Jesus transforms everyday life.
That could sound a bit intimidating, but In reality this is pretty simple. We try using play to help me make talking about Jesus NORMAL. I blog about it to keep me motivated. Cos left to my own devices I’m a lazy girl!
I’d love to hear how you do things. None of us are experts and it’s pretty tough constantly learning on the job! Share your wisdom and me and my kids will be very grateful.
If you want to see what we do, I’ll be posting our stories regularly or have a look through the archives. Feel free to get in touch if you can’t find something you’re looking for!
