In the last six months I’ve developed tinnitus. Here are some good things about it:
- The louder life around me is, the less I hear the ringing. Luckily, I have extraordinarily loud family.
- I have learned to ignore the children’s whining and crying. Therefore, I can ignore any incessant and irritating sound.
- If I could work out what note the ringing is (and could actually sing it) I could trick people into thinking I had perfect pitch.
- If I try really hard I can pretend it sounds like a glorious angelic choir is about to come into the room.
- I no longer notice the noise the fridge makes.
- It’s a different note in each ear, so it’ll never get boring.
- It gives Dave a chance to speak his love language: mockery. “I think you’re being very brave about this, Alice.” (I start feeling gleamy). You really suffer in silence” (cue: muffled snorts and guffaws).
- It acts a bit like a metal detector – the louder it gets the closer I am to getting a cold.
- Every day is brought to me by the letter “eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee”.
the photo has nothing to do with anything, but a pictureless post felt a bit odd. I should add that my tinnitus is pretty mild. I know that for lots of people it’s horrible, distracting and life-impacting. I don’t mean to minimise anyone else’s struggles. X

You are so positive! Despite the many good things about tinnitus that you have outlined, I hope it goes away in time. And I also hope that the two different notes form a pleasing musical chord xxx
You are amazingly brightsideoflife-ish Alice – good for you, do hope it gets sorted soon. You have also brought me a fabulous new word, gleamy. I shall use it at every opportunity! xxxx
another bridging point in our lives
you know that bit in the book of Revelation – about the half hour of silence – I’M TOTALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT after 20ish years of (literaly) never a quiet moment. Even when it’s loud and distracting, difficult to hear over and otherwise a pain in the butt, there are still positives in the ‘white noise’ of the inner ear.
Andy, this has made me laugh a lot!! Bring on the new creation! xxx
