Coffee, cake and a new pad. It’s a pretty great combination. (Especially as it’s a pad I can write on with felt tips without the ink going all bleedy – fellow stationary geeks out there, can I get an Amen?)

Once a month it’s respite day, which means Mikey goes to Barnardos for five hours and the rest of us do things that would be tricky otherwise. He loves it and so do we.

We tend to go to our favourite cafe and drink hot chocolate while eating sandwiches and playing with the strange array of toys from their free-for-all basket (playmobil toys with crucial bits missing, Mr. Men books and a doll so ugly even Jemima refused it).

Today was ultra treaty. After lunch Dave, Dan and Meems waved goodbye and I stayed on.

I ate giant cake, drank a latte with a heart on top and thought and wrote and pretended not to hear the old ladies who joined me at my table and discussed whether or not you stay in hospital after an operation for piles.

I’m now listening to Dave playing with Dan and Jemima in the basement. As far as I can tell, this consists of Dan drumming wildly (and yet impressively rhythmically) and Jemima laughing so hard it sounds as though she’s hurt.

I’m looking forward to seeing Mikey who will also have filled himself up with happy.

Oh joyful day.
